Cover for grass tetany, before it turns up.
MagMax is a magnesium supplement for cattle grazing green feed. It supplies magnesium, calcium and sodium to help take the edge off grass tetany risk through the autumn to spring green feed window.
What grass tetany is
Grass tetany occurs when a cow loses more magnesium than she takes in. When intake falls short, the result is hypomagnesaemia, and it can put a cow down fast with very little warning.
It shows up most often in older lactating cows in the first few months of lactation, but younger cows are not immune.
Cattle most at risk
  • Lactating cows over five years old, in the first three to four months of lactation
  • Cattle on strong grass based pastures from autumn through to spring, particularly where potassium and nitrogen are high. Both tie up magnesium and limit what the animal can absorb
  • Cattle on short pasture at two leaf stage or less, where the potassium to magnesium ratio tends to be at its worst
  • Cattle on lush low roughage pasture in cold, wet weather, when intake drops away
  • Cows carrying too much condition at fat score 3.5, and poor cows at fat score 2 or less
  • Any pasture that has had nitrogen or potassium fertiliser applied
If more than one of those is true on your place right now, you are in the risk window.
How to use it
Prevention beats treatment every time. Get MagMax out ahead of the challenge, not after the first cow goes down. Supply in troughs near water at one trough per 50 head, and keep it in front of them for the green feed period. MagMax is highly palatable, so cattle take it up without a fight.
